Turning Tragedy into Blessings

To give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit . . .
– Isaiah 61:3

Since the first Audio Bibles arrived in Indonesia in 2004, Faith Comes By Hearing has implemented over 5,800 Bible listening programs in the country. Partners say that often, the further they go from the larger cities, the more receptive the people are to the Gospel and the more excited they are to hear God’s Word. The majority of these people cannot read, so hearing Scripture in their heart language is a necessity.

Partners working with one family saw how listening to God’s Word turned a tragedy into a blessing for them. Hengki was paralyzed following a motorcycle accident and had been bedridden for three years. The family had been listening to the Balinese Audio Bible for several months and Hengki had already listened through the entire New Testament five times!

During one of their visits, partners asked Hengki if he knew the story of Lazarus. He was able to recite the entire story from memory. Then they asked if he knew about the lame man whose friends had brought him to Jesus. Once again, Hengki told the entire story, including everything Jesus had said.

After he told the story, Hengki made an amazing statement of his faith. He said:

I believe all that the Bible says! I have faith in Jesus, and I understand His teachings. I have peace right now, even though I would like to be healed and be able to walk again. But whatever happens to me from now on, I have peace in my heart because Jesus lives in my heart, and I and my family will live in eternity with Jesus without all this suffering!

Having the New Testament in their heart language has helped this family gain a better understanding of God’s plan for them and changed their lives. Superstitious fears and practices have been replaced by faith in the one true God. God’s Word provides the strength, hope, and wisdom Hengki and his family need to deal with the real challenges they face every day.

We are grateful to churches like First Assembly of God (Bosque Farms, NM), Fellowship Baptist Church (Borger, TX), Friend Christian Assembly (Friend, NE), East Suburban Community Church (Irwin, PA), Asbury United Methodist Church (Tulsa, OK), and many others for helping families like Hengki’s face the daily struggles of life by hearing His Word in their heart language.
