But I ask, have they not heard? Indeed they have, for “Their voice has gone out to all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world.”
– Romans 10:18
Faith Comes By Hearing has one purpose: God’s Word, everywhere for everyone! Until just a few years ago, the Pokoot people of Kenya had never heard about America and most did not even know that Nairobi was the capital of their country. Today, the Lord is using His Word to transform the lives of this people who live in the remote Chemorongit Valley. Life is important and precious to this language community of over 600,000 people. Because of their traditional beliefs, their greatest fears are illness and death. They had never heard that God loved them so much that He sent His son Jesus to give them eternal life, and healing for their souls.
An unexpected plea from a handful of Pokoot believers led Rick, an American missionary, to travel 50 miles into the bush to minister to a church of eight people meeting under a tree. These believers told about the lack of food in their village, and a deeper spiritual hunger because no one could read the Bible. Rick said he would do what he could. After raising funds in the U.S., a new road was built to help bring food and medicine to the village, and Christian workers brought a Proclaimer in the people’s heart language of Pokoot. Overnight, the church grew to 30 members and within a year, there were 60 members.
The leaders knew that other Pokoot villages had never heard the Gospel and shared this with Rick on one of his visits. Their burden became his burden, which led to a series of difficult trips on foot, across many miles of rugged and dangerous terrain. God’s protection through dehydration, heat stroke, ankle and knee injuries, a scorpion sting, and snake encounters has resulted in entire villages giving their lives to Christ, being baptized, and being discipled through Pokoot Proclaimers.
At least twice, visitors from neighboring villages received Christ and begged the group to come to their village on the next trip. In addition, a powerful seer with great influence across the valley also came to Christ and has aided the spread of the Good News. God is doing a tremendous work in Kenya and the Proclaimer is bringing the power of the Gospel to those who have never heard the Good News. Rick shared:
“The Proclaimer proved to be a very valuable tool since no one of that village could read their own language. It was amazing to me how easily they received the message that Jesus is now living in them . . . at how transformed these people had become from our first encounter six months prior. They had so much more life and joy!”
We are thankful for churches like First Baptist Church (McAlester, OK), Woodsedge Community Church (Spring, TX), Life Church (Mobile, AL), North Albany Community Church (Albany, OR), New Liberty Christian Church (Taylorsville, KY), and many others for partnering with us to bring God’s Word to the people of Kenya in their heart language.
