God is the great Conductor, orchestrating beautiful things for the Bonggi people. I recently had the wonderful privilege of attending the dedication ceremony for three recordings of Bonggi Bible portions. This event crowned the work of many people, all coordinated by God over many years.
In the 1980s, God moved a family of translators to the Bonggi region. They lived and built friendships with the Bonggi people through learning the language and culture.
Eventually, they worked together with the people to draft the New Testament, and bring to publication the books of Mark, Luke, and Acts.
Administrative responsibilities, however, necessitated their departure from the community in 2000 with the New Testament still incomplete. This only proved to be the end of one movement, not the end of the whole composition. Over time the Lord has added several new instruments to the arrangement, including Virtual Recording.
New Testament recordings that Faith Comes By Hearing completes are typically done by sending a two-person team out to the field; they will find local speakers of the language and on average spend 6 to 8 weeks in the region, sometimes in very dangerous areas and situations. As a result, sending a team out to record several portions of the Bible would prove to cost the same as a New Testament, yielding only a few books in return. Virtual Recording allows us to record Bible portions without having to send a team to the field.
In the summer of 2014, I joined the ensemble. That same year, the Lord stirred up a revival among the Bonggi that played a major role in motivating the community and bringing together the right personnel for recording the three published Bonggi portions.
Using Virtual Recording, we worked together to record the three portions of the Bonggi Bible. I saw first-hand how the Lord coordinated personnel, resources, and timing as only the Sovereign Conductor can do.
The recording of those portions was completed in the spring of 2015 as we moved from the dream of Audio Scripture in the Bonggi language to a spirited celebration of the completed project.
These portions are now playing on Proclaimers throughout the Bonggi community.
But that’s not the finale either.
God is still moving and working among the Bonggi community and, by His grace, the New Testament can be completed in His sovereign timing. What a privilege it is to be a part of this beautiful work of God among the Bonggi. May the Word of God among them – accessible, understandable – lead to new songs of joy that last forever.
