Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
– Ephesians 6:4
As a father, Zahid faced the pressure of caring for his family. He felt alone, because his father had never been there for him. He didn’t have anyone to look up to or to help him learn how to care for his family. Finances were always tight, which left him angry, frustrated, and discouraged. Though Zahid loved and provided for them, he was not always around – he had to work long hours to earn more money. When he was home, they often felt the verbal sting of his frustrations.
Then, Zahid heard God speak in his heart language and his life was transformed. He said:
I went to church regularly, but never learned how to depend on God. Instead, I depended on money to meet my needs and always thought about how to get more. One day, I listened to the Proclaimer and heard Jesus say, ‘Where your treasure is, your heart [mind] will be there also.’ I thought about those words but then forgot them because I lived in poverty and had no treasure. The next week, I heard Jesus say, ‘Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.’ I realized that I spent a lot of time thinking about things I could not change. I decided to depend on God and give all of my burdens to Him. Instead of worrying, I began to pray and focus on the things Jesus said and did. Two months later, I realized that the money crisis in my family had vanished. Somehow, we had enough to meet our needs. My life has changed since I began listening to God’s Word. My family is secure and I have the living Word of God in my mind and peace in my heart, too.
For Zahid, and many other men who didn’t have the example of an earthly father to teach them about their Heavenly Father, hearing the Word of God in their own language is helping them become better fathers and find peace in their hearts. As Zahid and other fathers get closer to God, they are ensuring that the legacy they leave behind will impact future generations of husbands and fathers.
