Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
– John 15:5
“Let’s face it . . . you’re not good enough!”
Those words haunted Julita. Sometimes, she just wanted to run and hide. No matter what she did, she couldn’t measure up. She was always comparing herself to others and coming up short. She couldn’t trust anyone and had no ambition in life. She summed up her life this way, “No matter what I did, it wasn’t right.”
When a friend invited her to come to a Bible listening group in her heart language of Ilokano, Julita thought, What harm can it do? As she listened to the words of Jesus, she thought, He understands me! Jesus was answering her toughest questions. Then she heard Him say, “I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”
Julita realized that she was trying to live her life apart from Jesus. No wonder she couldn’t do anything! The more she listened, the more Julita realized that Jesus loved her. She had never felt loved or lovable before, but now things had changed.
That day, Julita trusted Jesus as her Savior and she knew her days of struggling to be good enough were over. She said, “Not only did I find the Bible, the Author found me. Now, I know that no one can really be good unless Jesus makes that person whole. He is the center of my Bible hearing, reading, and discussion.”
We are grateful to churches like Union Church (Hong Kong), Ocean Lake Christian Church (Lincoln, City, OR), Bethel Church (Boone, IA), The Bridge Church (Flowood, MS), Hilltop Family Church, (Springtown, TX), and many others for helping people in the Philippines – like Julita – and all around the world discover that God loves them enough to speak their language.
