Europe

Millions of Eastern Europeans struggle with poverty and ethnic fragmentation. While many among their western neighbors embrace secularism in their security and have turned away from their Christian heritage.

There are close to 400 people groups in Europe that are partially evangelized. Audio Bible listening programs in the heart languages of these nations can help complete the task of making disciples.

God is Not Religious (Azerbaijan)

An in-country worker, Elmir, prayed for seven years about how he might share Christ with one of his neighbors, a very famous and well respected religious leader. About 80 years old, the man was almost totally blind and sat in front of his house every day, so Elmir would stop to chat with him regularly. In these conversations, he began sharing various things from the Bible for the man to meditate on between their interactions.

Finally, he felt comfortable enough with the old man to give him a Proclaimer, though the potential for a negative reaction by the family concerned him. Three days later, this man had listened to the entire Audio Bible recording and, while he really liked it, he expressed a feeling of unrest and a lack of peace in his heart. Questions and discussion followed in which Elmir explained the truth of God's Word and the concept of repentance. Agreeing to be led in the sinner's prayer, afterward he asked that no one be told, given everything he had to lose.

A week later, like Nicodemus in the night, the old man showed up at Elmir's door very late. Not wanting anyone to know about the visit, he had braved the dark streets with only his walking stick to guide him. His previous doubts about going to heaven were gone, but he wanted to know how to pray to Jesus. Elmir answered all his questions and asked if they could pray together, which they did.

When Elmir offered to walk him home, the old man confessed that he no longer had possession of the Proclaimer. His brother, also a religious leader, had taken it from him and liked it so much that he wouldn't give it back. Sheepishly, he asked if it might be possible to receive another one; Elmir was happy to oblige.

Soon after, a steady stream of the man's relatives and friends began coming to Elmir's door asking for Proclaimers. While he was unable to give one to every person, he used prayer and their willingness to start a listening group as his guide. The remarkable change that is taking place is a true blessing from God!
