Comfort My People

Isaiah 40:1

The reports from Haiti are horrific and heartbreaking—an orphanage completely destroyed, small clothes piled on the pavement, covered with flies. Four men from the neighborhood digging with only their hands to recover little bodies. They work tirelessly so they can lay the 56 children and one caretaker to rest and rid the area of the smell. The 70 boys and girls who survived are sitting on a tarp in the backyard, many of them crying, some silent. From babies to ten-year-olds, the lawn is now their home. They have lost everything, and playmates are dead just feet away.

And this is only one orphanage among many, and 127 among three million people, who have been affected by this quake.

In the midst of this unspeakable tragedy, Faith Comes By Hearing is working together with partners already on the ground bringing aid to share God's Word to these desperately needing comfort and hope.

3,000 Proclaimers in Haitian Creole have reached Haiti since this devastating quake. Disaster relief organizations Convoy of Hope and Score International, teams of U.S. Christian doctors, and dozens of churches have delivered these solar-powered Audio Bibles to minister emotional and spiritual healing along with providing much needed food, water, clothing, and supplies.

A missionary in Haiti wrote on Twitter, "some of the worst effects are emotional . . . no smiles on the street and a sense of despair."

Another ministry partner there sent in a report stating, "Many are thirsty for words of comfort and ask us for the Bible. Throughout town, the streets are packed and many are praying."

And as CNN reported on the blessing of Proclaimers in Haiti, "There was this one little girl we saw in this tent. She had her Bible next to her. She had just a few pieces of clothing and she was looking after her family. And she said, This is what keeps me going, it's my Bible."

According to the CIA World Fact Book, more than 90% of Haitians identify themselves as Christians; but with 70-80% living on less than $2 a day (before this devastating quake), and a functional literacy rate as low as 20%, Audio Bibles are crucial for them to hear Jesus' words of comfort.

Over 3,300 Audio Bibles in Haitian Creole have been sent to Haiti over the last two decades and another 653 Proclaimers have been carried in by individuals, churches, and missions groups with a heart to share God's Word.
