Dr. Ed Young of Second Baptist Church in Houston, TX launches You’ve Got the Time Houston

When Dr. Ed Young of Second Baptist Church heard about You’ve Got the Time launching in Houston in January 2009 and began listening to the BibleStick for himself, he decided to get involved immediately. He says,

Quote

It is a super opportunity to get on the same page as a church family. Most of us have been reading the Bible for many, many years. Listening to God’s Word, however, can add even greater depth and understanding to our times in the Scripture.”
-- Dr. Ed Young, Second Baptist Church in Houston TX

The church originally planned to embark on this “amazing Bible listening adventure” on September 15th. They gave out almost 37,000 MP3 discs—not only in English, but also Spanish, Farsi, Mandarin, Arabic, Japanese, and Bulgarian. They also provided 3,500 BibleSticks for adults not familiar with MP3 technology, and gave 6,000 KIDZ BibleSticks to the children.

Then hurricane Ike hit. Though their main campus sustained substantial damage, Second Baptist understands the power of God’s Word, and despite the hurricane, began listening two weeks later on September 29th.

There was a foot of water in the Worship Center and water threatened to break the beautiful stained glass dome as it collected around blocked gutters. They had to conduct the service after the hurricane outside on their soccer field, and are currently holding services in two gymnasiums and the sanctuary as the Worship Center is repaired (which could take up to a year).

However, the BibleSticks were a timely source of peace. Though there was no electricity, many had their battery powered BibleSticks. Stories came in about the children sitting with the earbuds in their ears, listening to their KIDZ BibleSticks, and feeling comforted by God’s Word.

You’ve Got the Time Houston

You’ve Got the Time Houston is scheduled to launch January 2009 for the Houston metropolitan area, as well as Galveston. Our goal is to get Audio Bibles to every man, woman, and child in 3,600 Houston churches during 2009.

A series of pastors’ luncheons will be held to introduce You’ve Got the Time Houston. The first one, a gathering of pastors and leaders from churches of all different denominations, was held in November at Sugar Creek Baptist Church in Sugarland. Several other gatherings will be held through mid-January, including one co-hosted by Memorial Drive Presbyterian and St. John the Divine Episcopal (whose 3,000 members began listening to the Bible in October).
