Faith Comes By Hearing in Poverty

Brother Agustín Cheuquiñan is in charge of the work of the Open Bible church in the Marrimenuco area of Lonquimay.  He is not called pastor because he has not received any sort of theological training and his secular studies are few. This has given him much difficulty being in charge, although his enthusiasm and display of responsibility for the work is superior to what many pastors show for their studies.

Agustín has a beautiful family.  His wife and four children learn every day to live with their poverty, which could be classified as extreme. The area of Marrimenuco where they live does not have electricity, but it has not been an obstacle for their work in Faith Comes By Hearing.  With some effort, they can listen to the Audio Bible using batteries.  However, this is a very expensive way to do it because of their great poverty.  But, the hunger for the Word is bigger than any extreme impediment such as having no money whatsoever.

Agustín listens and learns in order to attend to his congregation like he couldn’t do before. It has also awakened a profound desire in him to read and study the Bible, something that didn’t happen before because he didn’t understand the Word of God.  For him, listening to the Word in Mapudungun has enhanced his comprehension of the Bible, and his faith has also increased.  Before hearing the New Testament, he didn’t understand that miracles of the Bible still exist today and that he could pray for the sick and that the Lord would heal them.  Another wonderful result of hearing in Mapudungun is that the Word has also developed his ability to speak to others about the Lord, which is imperative for his ministry.  

Since she is not Mapuche, Agustín’s wife is learning Mapudungun as she listens to the New Testament. However, they say that listening has given her something special that she cannot explain. Although she understands little of what she is hearing, she receives a blessing of peace in her heart. Their children are also learning Mapudungun.

The Faith Comes By Hearing program is blessing this entire family in a very beautiful way.

A Chilean Testimony

Near Temuco City we can find a school with 87 children and 17 adults. The Director is a Christian woman and the mayor of the other teachers. The Director is using the Faith Comes By Hearing program in the 8th grade and now within less than one month, 9 children have received Christ by listening to the New Testament.

The Director said that the Lord is touching the hearts of these 13- to 14-year-old children with the Word of God in Spanish and Mapudungun.
